Nurit Jugend (Karen)

Nurit Jugend graduated from Stanford University with Doctor in Musical Arts in Music Composition, working with Jonathan Berger, Jonathan Harvey and Brian Ferneyhough. Dr. Jugend began her musical education at the Jerusalem Rubin Academy, where she studied with Dr. Ari Ben-Shabetai, earning a B.A. in Music Theory and Composition. Since, Dr. Jugend has studied at the Hochschüle der Künste in Berlin with Walter Zimmermann and Frederic Rzewski. To date, Dr. Jugend has authored over a dozen published works, which have been performed in France, Israel, USA, Italy, Luxembourg, Germany, Yugoslavia, Iceland, Croatia and Austria. These performances include participation in the 2000 Luxembourg ISCM World Music Festival, the Belgrade Festival for Contemporary Music, the Tel-Aviv 2000 Biennale festival for Contemporary music, 2005 ISCM in Croatia-Zagreb, Novi-sad- Slovenia and many radio broadcasts. Her works have been played by the Amber Trio, the St. Lawrence String Quartet, the Sirius Group, the Stanford String Chamber Group, the 21st Century Contemporary Players of Israel, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Maestro Zubin Mehta, the E-Mex Trio from Germany, the Calarts Contemporary Ensemble, the Slovenian Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Sean Edwards, the EurOrchestra under Maestro Franseco Lentini. These works have earned Dr. Jugend several awards, including a special mention by the jury at the Arturo Toscanini Foundation Competition for her symphony Parody, first prize for composition at the Klon Competition for Composers, first prize at the Liebersohn Composition Competition for Orchestral Works for the piece The Voice Of Silence, the Acum prize for the work Bows To Brushes, the 2003-04 Giles Whiting Dissertation Fellowship on behalf of the Humanities and Sciences at Stanford University for her work Self-portrait, the Subito Grant from the American Composer’s League (ACL) and a grant on behalf of the Peninsula Community Foundation in support of the Concert-Gallery Event (Crossing Boundaries) – a series of concerts consisting of works by composer’s whom also paint featuring works by Dr. Jugend and others. Dr. Jugend received a special scholarship and will attend the 2007 Summer Composers Residency at the Banff Centre in Canada.
