Alona Epstein

Alona Epshtein was born in 1975, Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1990 immigrated to Israel.
She studied composition at Rubin Academy of Music in Tel-Aviv with professor Leon Schidlowsky and with Ruben Seroussi (M.Mus. in Composition with Summa Cum Laude) and was a recipient of America-Israel Cultural Foundation scholarship, Wolfson scholarship and Buchmann Foundation Doctoral scholarship.
Alona Epshtein’s works include 2 operas for children, piano, vocal, chamber, orchestral and choral music, semi-aleatoric chamber opera ‘Symbiosis’,music for theatre and films.
Her music was commissioned and performed in Israel and abroad, in opportunities such as ”Aviv” Competitions (Tel-Aviv 2005) ,international festivals “Young Euro Classics”(Berlin 2006), Kfar-Blum Chamber Music festival (Kfar-Blum 2010),ACL festival (Taipei 2011),Contemporary Music Days (Nuremberg 2013), as well as concert series in New York and Buenos Aires . Two of her orchestral pieces won first prizes ,”Shearim” in 2006 and “Mal’achei Stav” in 2010 (Acum Prize) and in 2013 she received Israeli Prime Minister Award for composition.
In addition to her compositional activities, Alona is working on research project which focuses on intertextuality and other aspects of Israeli avant-garde music. In 2013 her article “Modern Passion by Leon Schidlowsky- in search of individual language” was published in Peimot magazine for music and culture (Resling Publications, Tel-Aviv).
Alona Epshtein is teaching privately elementary theory, ear training, harmony, counterpoint, musical analysis and score reading.
Since 2010 is a chairperson of Israeli Women Composers Forum.
