Deborah Schramm

Deborah Rothstein Schramm was born in the United States, where she received her bachelor’s degree at the Eastman School of Music and master’s at Boston University (both of them in piano performance and literature). In Israel she studied composition with Sergiu Natra. In 2005 she received an Artist’s Diploma from the Jerusalem Rubin Academy of Music, where she studied with Menachem Zur.
Since her aliya in 1975 she has continued to compose and perform, and has appeared on stage in the United States, Europe, Israel, and Japan.
Over the last two decades she has worked extensively with students with special needs (blind, autistic, Down Syndrome) and developed techniques of piano pedagogy specially suited to them. Her work with one student, a blind and autistic Palestinian woman, was the subject of the documentary short Beautiful Music (2005).
Religious themes and pieces for children have always been prominent in her compositions. These include solo, orchestral, and ensemble pieces, ballet music, and arrangements of traditional melodies.
