Aryeh Levanon

Aryeh Levanon Aryeh Levanon was born in Rumania and immigrated to Israel in 1951. He is a graduate of the Tel Aviv Academy of Music where he studied conducting with Gary Bertini and composition with A.U. Boskovich. During his military service he was Music Director of the Central Command Entertainment Troupe which put him in close touch with Israeli popular and folk music. He is best known for his activities in this field and his song “When Evening Falls” won first prize in the first Israeli Song Festival.
Between 1960 and 1962 he continued his conducting studies in Italy - in Rome, with Franco Ferrera and in Siena, with Sergiu Celibidache. Levanon composed music for films and for theatres, for vocal duos and trios (the Dudaim, the Ofarim and others) and wrote music for children’s and youth programmes. He was thrice awarded the Nissimov Prize for choral music and has conducted most of the choirs and orchestras in Israel. From 1972 to 1982 he was conductor-in-residence of the Israel Opera and was musical director of all major productions of musicals in the country.
He composed chamber music, choral and orchestral works and wrote arrangements of the music of the diverse Jewish communities for a variety of ensembles. At present he lectures at the Levinsky College (Music Teachers Training College); serves as Chairman of the Israeli Society for Performers Rights and is on the Board of Directors of ACUM.
